September is National Preparedness Month - Are you ready?

Posted on September 24, 2012

This September during National Preparedness Month, Americans are urged to develop a family preparedness plan for dealing with a wide variety of emergencies, including severe weather, fire, disease outbreaks or events like terrorism and bioterrorism.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) recommends the following tips to help you prepare:

  • Talk to your family members about preparedness and how to respond calmly to emergencies. Discuss what you would need to do to shelter in place, leave your home or evacuate your city.
  • Identify two meeting places, one near your home and one away from the neighborhood in the event family members cannot return to the house.
  • Post emergency phone numbers beside the telephone. Teach children how to call 911.
  • Choose a friend or relative out-of-state whom all family members will telephone to check in. The out-of-state relative can relay messages. When evacuating, notify relatives and friends about your plans. Be familiar with designated evacuation routes leading out of town.
  • Draw a home floor plan and choose at least two escape routes. Make sure you know how to shut off the water, gas and electricity.
  • Keep an emergency supply kit, including water, non-perishable food, important documents, radio and flashlight with extra batteries, extra eye glasses, medications and special needs products for babies and the elderly.
  • Make plans for family members or neighbors with special needs, as well as for care of pets.

For more information on emergency preparedness, visit FEMA.gov.

Election 2012: Asking the candidates about biological attacks

Posted on August 20, 2012

Undoubtedly, the economy will dominate discussions and be the center of many debates this political season. However, the scientific community has developed a set of questions to engage political leaders about their knowledge and stance on topics such as pandemics, climate change, research and more. One important topic making the list of 14 questions is the threat of biological attacks. The specific question, according to Scientific American, is:

4. Pandemics and Biosecurity. Recent experiments show how Avian flu may become transmissible among mammals. In an era of constant and rapid international travel, what steps should the United States take to protect our population from emerging diseases, global pandemics and/or deliberate biological attacks?

For more information on the effort to reach out to congressional leaders and presidential candidates, see the full article on Scientific American.

White House releases National Strategy for Biosurveliance

Posted on August 1, 2012

The White House has released a National Strategy for Biosurveillance, calling for a strategic implementation plan to be completed within 120 days. The strategy is the latest in a series of orders and guidelines directing a response to a biological or radiological attack.

Introducing the strategy, dated July 31, 2012, President Obama says:

There is no higher priority than the security and safety of the American people. As a Nation, we must be prepared for the full range of threats, including a terrorist attack involving a biological agent, the spread of infectious diseases, and food-borne illnesses. The effective dissemination of a lethal biological agent, for instance, could endanger the lives of hundreds of thousands of people and result in untold economic, societal, and political consequences.

Dr. Oz: Bioterrorism- Anthrax, Botulism, & Bubonic Plague

Posted on July 9, 2012

Dr. Oz discussed bioterrorism (anthrax, botulism & the bubonic plague) and the threat of such terrorist attacks on the United States with Colonel Randell Larson, Dr. Jeffrey Runge (a former Department of Homeland Security officer), and Dr. Leigh Vinocur.

The threat of a terrorist attack using bioweapons is very real.  Anthrax, botulism, the bubonic plague, ebola marburg losa and smallpox can all be tailor-made to become a weapon of mass destruction.  So how can we protect ourselves and our families from bio-terror?  Colonel Randell Larson said that bio terror is much more likely than a nuclear attack, even though small bombs are the most likely, but the bio-technical revolution is the real game changer and much more deadly potentially than bombs.

Dr. Oz said that the following countries (and more) already have the resources to have bioweapons: Algeria, China, Egypt, France, Germany, India, Iran, Korea, Pakistan, Russia and South Africa.  All you need is a camel to get anthrax or a sick prairie dog to get the plague.  These bio-weapons are not highly protected and cannot ever be guarded since they exist naturally in nature.
